Understanding Window Energy Ratings

U-factor, SHGC, visible transmittance, and air leakage are on every NFRC label. Here is what each one means and which matters most in your climate.

Window sales conversations are full of performance claims, and most of them are unverifiable. The one place where the numbers are standardized and comparable is the NFRC label, the sticker on the glass of every certified window.

Learning to read it takes about five minutes and turns a subjective conversation into a comparable one. If two companies are quoting different windows, the label tells you what you are actually being offered.

The Four Numbers

U-factor measures how much heat passes through the whole window assembly, including frame, spacer, and glass. Lower is better. It typically ranges from around one and a quarter at the poor end down to below two tenths for high performance products. It is the inverse of R-value, which is why the direction is confusing at first. If you are heating your home more than cooling it, this is your primary number.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, or SHGC, measures how much of the sun's heat comes through, on a scale from zero to one. Lower means less solar heat enters. In a hot climate you want it low, because that heat becomes air conditioning load. In a cold climate a higher figure on south facing windows contributes useful winter warmth, which is why the standards do not simply push it as low as possible everywhere.

Visible Transmittance, or VT, measures how much visible light comes through, also from zero to one. Higher means a brighter room. It is worth watching because some coatings that reduce solar gain also reduce light noticeably, and a window that performs well and makes the room feel dim is not a good trade in every room.

Air Leakage, or AL, measures leakage through the assembly. Lower is better. Not every manufacturer reports it, and it is worth asking for.

Some labels also carry Condensation Resistance, a zero to one hundred scale where higher indicates better resistance to condensation forming on the interior surface. In cold climates this is a comfort issue people notice more than they expect to.

Climate Decides Which Number Leads

There is no single correct specification, which is why national marketing claims about window performance are close to meaningless.

  • Cold northern climates. U-factor dominates. Solar gain on south facing glass is generally a benefit rather than a penalty, so a very low SHGC can be counterproductive.
  • Hot southern climates. SHGC dominates. Keeping solar heat out of the house is the main job, and U-factor matters less because the temperature difference across the glass is smaller.
  • Mixed climates. Both matter, and the sensible answer often varies by orientation. West facing glass takes the harshest afternoon sun and benefits most from a low SHGC.

A competent window company will ask which direction your problem windows face. One that quotes a single specification for the whole house without asking is selling a product rather than solving a problem.

What Creates the Numbers

Understanding the construction helps you evaluate what you are being upsold.

Glazing layers. Double pane is the baseline. Triple pane improves U-factor meaningfully and adds weight and cost, and it pays back mostly in genuinely cold climates. In mild climates it is usually a comfort and sound purchase rather than an energy one.

Low emissivity coatings. Microscopically thin metallic layers on the glass that reflect heat. Different coatings are tuned for different climates, which is where the low SHGC and high SHGC products diverge.

Gas fill. Argon between the panes reduces conduction relative to air. Krypton performs better in narrow gaps and costs more. Fill loss over decades is real but slow.

Spacers. The material separating the panes at the edge. Warm edge spacers reduce heat transfer at the perimeter, which is where condensation appears first.

Frame material. Vinyl, fiberglass, wood, and composite frames insulate reasonably well. Aluminum conducts heat readily unless it has a thermal break. The frame is a substantial fraction of a window's area and its performance is included in the whole window U-factor, which is the figure to compare.

Whole Window Versus Center of Glass

This is the most common place where numbers are quoted misleadingly. Center of glass figures ignore the frame and edge, and they look better than the whole window figures. NFRC certified labels report whole window values. If a salesperson quotes a U-factor that seems unusually strong, ask whether it is a whole window NFRC number.

ENERGY STAR and the Certification Question

ENERGY STAR sets thresholds by climate zone and updates them periodically, with the current version tightening requirements in most zones. The program moved to a new administering agency, which we covered in ENERGY STAR moved to a new agency.

Watch for language like energy efficient or meets efficiency standards, which mean nothing specific. Certification means the actual mark plus an NFRC label with numbers on it. Ask for the label, or for the NFRC certified product listing, rather than a brochure.

Tax Credits and Rebates

Federal energy efficiency credits have changed, and homeowners should not budget from remembered figures. The current position is covered in federal home energy tax credits ended, and anyone planning around a credit should confirm the current rules with a tax professional or the IRS directly.

Utility rebates are a separate and often overlooked track. Many utilities offer per window incentives for qualifying products, and these are unaffected by federal changes. Check your own utility's program before ordering, since some require pre approval.

What the Label Will Not Tell You

Installation quality is not on the sticker, and a high performance window installed badly will underperform a modest window installed well. Air sealing at the rough opening, correct flashing, and proper shimming determine whether the assembly performs as rated.

Finally, be cautious with savings estimates. Actual savings depend on what you are replacing, your climate, your energy prices, and how leaky the rest of the house is. Replacing single pane windows produces a very different result from replacing serviceable double pane ones.
