Ice Dams and What Actually Stops Them

Ice dams are a heat problem that shows up as a roof problem. Heat cable and roof raking treat the symptom, and the fix is usually in the attic.

An ice dam forms because part of your roof is warm and part of it is cold. Snow on the heated section melts, the water runs down to the eave, which is unheated because there is no living space beneath it, and refreezes there. The ridge of ice grows, water backs up behind it, and eventually it finds a path under the shingles and into the house.

This is why ice dams appear on some houses and not on the identical house next door. The weather is the same. The attic is not.

The Signs

  • Thick ice at the eaves and in the gutters, particularly with icicles hanging from the roof edge rather than only from the gutter
  • Bare patches on the roof while neighboring roofs stay covered, which indicates heat loss
  • Water staining on interior ceilings near exterior walls, usually appearing during a thaw
  • Wet insulation in the attic near the eaves
  • Peeling paint or damp drywall at the top of exterior walls

Some of this shows up months later as a stain nobody connects to the previous winter.

Why the Roof Is Warm

Three mechanisms, usually all present together.

Air leakage from the living space into the attic is generally the largest. Warm air escapes through gaps around recessed lights, plumbing stacks, wiring penetrations, the attic hatch, and the top plates of interior walls, and it heats the roof deck from below.

Insufficient insulation lets heat conduct through the ceiling.

Poor ventilation means whatever heat does reach the attic stays there. A properly ventilated attic keeps the roof deck near outside temperature by moving cold air in at the soffits and out at the ridge.

Ducts and equipment in the attic add a fourth mechanism. Leaky supply ducts in an unconditioned attic dump heated air directly where you least want it, which is covered in ductwork and why new HVAC sometimes disappoints.

The Real Fix

Air seal, insulate, ventilate, in that order.

Sealing the ceiling plane stops the warm air from reaching the attic in the first place. Insulation then slows the remaining conductive heat loss. Ventilation carries away what still gets through. Doing the third without the first two is a common and mostly ineffective approach, because you cannot ventilate your way out of a large air leak.

Confirm that soffit vents are open and not packed with insulation. Baffles hold the ventilation channel open above the insulation at the eave, and their absence is one of the most frequent findings in an attic with ice dam history. This work usually costs less than the roof repairs it prevents, and it improves comfort and heating bills as a side effect rather than as the main event.

What Roofing Can Do

Roofing details matter at replacement time even though they do not address the cause.

Ice and water shield, a self adhering waterproof membrane applied along the eaves before the shingles, is required by code in many cold climates. It does not prevent an ice dam. It prevents the water backing up behind one from entering the house, which is most of what you care about. If your roof predates that requirement, this is a strong argument for including it whenever you next replace.

Ask about coverage width. Codes typically specify that the membrane extend a set distance inside the exterior wall line, and on a low slope roof or a deep eave that means more than one course.

Heat Cable and Roof Rakes

Heat cable run in a zigzag along the eaves melts channels through the ice so water can drain. It manages the symptom, it consumes electricity all winter, and it is a reasonable stopgap on a house where the attic fix is genuinely impractical, such as a cathedral ceiling with no accessible cavity. It is not a substitute for the attic work where the attic work is possible.

Roof rakes pull snow off the lower few feet of roof from the ground, removing the material that feeds the dam. Used from the ground, on a single story or the reachable portion of a two story, this is legitimate and inexpensive. Do not do it from a ladder in winter conditions.

Do not chip at ice with anything metal. You will damage shingles and flashing, and the repair costs more than the dam would have. Do not use rock salt directly on the roof either, as it corrodes flashing and fasteners and kills the plantings below.

If a dam is actively leaking into the house, the accepted emergency measure is to create a drainage channel through the ice, often using a calcium chloride product in a fabric sleeve laid perpendicular to the eave. Then address the cause before next winter.

Gutters Are Not the Cause

Gutters get blamed for ice dams and they are largely innocent. A dam forms at the roof edge whether gutters are there or not. Clogged gutters do make things worse by holding water and ice, so autumn cleaning still matters, and how often gutters need cleaning covers timing. But removing gutters does not remove ice dams.

Ice loads do damage gutters and hangers, so inspect them after a hard winter rather than assuming they came through it.

Who to Call

This project frequently involves two trades. An insulation contractor or energy auditor handles the attic. A roofer handles membrane, flashing, and any damage repair. Some companies do both, and an energy audit with a blower door test is a good way to get a prioritized list before hiring either.
