Do Home Batteries Make Sense With Solar?

Storage is increasingly bundled into solar proposals. Here is when a battery earns its cost, when it is a backup purchase, and what to check before adding one.

Batteries have moved from an unusual add on to a standard line in many solar proposals. Part of that is falling equipment cost and part is a change in how utilities compensate exported solar power, which has made storing your own production more attractive than selling it.

Whether it makes sense for a particular home depends on which of three problems you are actually trying to solve, because they have different answers.

Three Different Reasons to Buy Storage

Backup power during outages. This is the reason most homeowners give and it is a legitimate one. It is also the reason least likely to produce a financial return, because you are buying reliability rather than savings. That is fine as long as it is understood as such and compared against the alternative, which is usually a standby generator.

Getting value from solar production the utility no longer pays much for. Under older net metering rules, exported power earned close to retail rate and the grid served as a free battery. Where those rules have changed, exported power earns considerably less than what you pay to buy it back in the evening. Storing daytime production for evening use closes that gap. Time of use rate arbitrage. If your utility charges substantially more during peak evening hours, a battery lets you avoid buying at the peak rate. The value scales with the spread between peak and off peak pricing, and in some markets that spread is wide enough to matter on its own even without solar.

Being clear about which of these you are buying determines how the system should be sized and configured.

What Storage Costs

Published figures vary considerably by capacity and product. Installed cost for a typical single home battery commonly runs from the high four figures into the mid five figures, with larger multi unit installations higher. Cost per usable kilowatt hour is the comparable measure across products, and it is worth asking each installer to state it.

Note that a battery added to an existing solar system usually costs more than the same battery installed at the same time as the array, because the electrician is mobilizing separately and the inverter arrangement may need changing. If you think you will want storage eventually, it is worth pricing both scenarios up front.

Federal incentives for storage have changed and homeowners should not plan from remembered figures. Confirm the current position with a tax professional and check state and utility programs separately, since several states run their own storage incentives on independent timelines, similar to the pattern we described in state heat pump rebates are running on different clocks.

The Specifications That Matter

  • Usable capacity in kilowatt hours, not nameplate capacity. These differ, sometimes meaningfully.
  • Continuous power output in kilowatts, which determines what you can run at once. Capacity determines how long, power output determines what.
  • Surge capacity, which matters for motor loads such as a well pump, air conditioner, or refrigerator compressor starting up.
  • Round trip efficiency, the share of energy stored that comes back out. Some is always lost.
  • Depth of discharge and how the warranty treats cycling.
  • Warranty, usually expressed in years, total throughput, or cycles, with a guaranteed remaining capacity at the end. Compare all three figures rather than just the year count.
  • Chemistry. Lithium iron phosphate is now common in home storage and is generally regarded as more thermally stable than the nickel based chemistries used in earlier products.

Whole Home or Partial Backup

This is the design decision that surprises people. Most residential batteries cannot run an entire house, particularly one with central air conditioning and electric heat.

The common arrangement is a critical loads panel, a subpanel wired to the circuits you actually want during an outage: refrigerator, some lighting, internet equipment, medical devices, well pump, and a few outlets. Deciding what goes on it is worth doing carefully, because changing it later means an electrician.

Whole home backup is possible with enough capacity and output, and it costs accordingly. Ask each installer to state explicitly which circuits will be backed up and for how long under realistic conditions.

Two Things Homeowners Often Discover Late

A grid tied solar system without a battery shuts down during an outage. This surprises many homeowners. It is a safety requirement, so that a system does not energize lines that utility crews believe are dead. If outage resilience is your goal, solar alone does not provide it, and this is often the moment storage enters the conversation.

Batteries recharge from solar only when the sun is producing. During a multi day winter storm with heavy cloud, a battery may not recharge meaningfully. Sizing for a realistic worst case rather than a typical day matters if backup is the point.

Battery Versus Generator

For backup specifically, compare against a standby generator honestly.

A generator runs as long as it has fuel, handles large loads, and costs less for a given amount of backup capability. It also requires fuel, maintenance, and periodic exercise, makes noise, and does nothing on the days you do not lose power.

A battery is silent, needs no maintenance, and earns its keep daily through rate arbitrage or self consumption. It is limited in duration and in the size of load it can carry.

Homes in areas with frequent multi day outages often end up with a generator. Homes with short frequent outages and a favorable rate structure are better candidates for storage.

Virtual Power Plant Programs

Some utilities pay homeowners to allow limited control of their battery during peak demand events. These programs can improve the economics noticeably, and they involve giving up some control over your stored energy at specific times.

If a program is available in your area, read the terms on how often events occur, how much capacity can be called on, and what reserve you are allowed to keep for your own backup.

The Question to Ask Yourself First

Before pricing storage, call your utility and find out what they pay for exported solar and whether you are on a time of use rate. Those two answers determine most of the financial case, and neither one comes from the installer.
